San Diego, California — Manufacturers and distributors of High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) processed natural diamonds are identifying an opportunity within this highly specialized segment of the diamond market.
Gerry Hauser, CEO of Hadar Diamonds and a distributor of HPHT natural diamonds, explained that two distinct categories of diamonds are associated with the HPHT process.
“The first is a lab-grown, or synthetic, diamond that is created using HPHT by simulating the conditions by which a natural diamond is produced.”
The second category is a natural diamond that undergoes HPHT processing to modify a brownish color and allow the stone to achieve its full color potential.

HPHT processing of eligible Type IIa natural diamonds recreates an environment of extreme heat and pressure. The process can relieve structural stresses within the diamond that contribute to a brownish appearance, allowing the stone’s color to improve.

HPHT-processed natural diamonds remain natural diamonds. The process is distinct from growing a laboratory-created diamond, although both applications use high pressure and high temperature.
The treatment must be disclosed, and the diamond should be accompanied by an independent grading report that identifies the process.
